Defense Support of Civil Authorities

ADP 3-28 explains how Army forces support civil authorities at home -- disaster response, civil support, and the legal boundaries that come with domestic operations. It covers both the federal force and National Guard civil support missions. Read it before a hurricane rotation, not during one.

Offense and Defense

ADP 3-90 holds the fundamentals of offensive and defensive operations: the forms of maneuver, the types of attacks, and the forms of the defense. It is the doctrinal parent for FM 3-90, Tactics, which carries the detail. If a board asks about the four types of offensive operations, this is where the answer lives.

Fires

ADP 3-19 defines the fires warfighting function -- its tasks, its capabilities, and how effects are delivered and integrated through targeting. It deliberately covers more than field artillery: air and missile defense, joint fires, and nonlethal effects all live here. It replaced ADP 3-09 as the Army's fundamental fires publication.

Operations

ADP 3-0 is the Army's capstone description of how it conducts operations. The March 2025 edition carries multidomain operations as the Army's operational concept and supersedes the July 2019 edition. It sets the vocabulary -- warfighting functions, combat power, the operational framework -- that nearly every other doctrinal publication uses.

Stability

ADP 3-07 is the Army's doctrine for stability operations. It explains the stability operations tasks, how they relate to offense and defense, and how military efforts fit alongside civilian agencies and host-nation institutions. It matters most during consolidation of gains, when the fighting slows and the governing does not.

Tactics

FM 3-90 is the Army's tactics manual for offensive, defensive, and enabling operations. It merged the two 2013 volumes of FM 3-90 into one book, so reconnaissance, security, and other enabling tasks now sit with the offense and defense chapters. It is the detail behind ADP 3-90.

Individual Sick Slip

The sick call slip that sends a Soldier to the aid station and returns the provider's disposition and any duty limitations to the unit.

Packing List

The packing list taped to or filed with a container so the receiver can verify contents against what was shipped.

Request for Conditional Release

Requests release from a current service obligation so a member can enlist or accept an appointment in another component or branch.

What are the four general categories of chemical agents?

Nerve agents, blister agents, blood agents, and choking agents. Riot control agents and incapacitating agents are also encountered but are not casualty agents in the same sense.

What are the levels of decontamination?

Immediate, operational, and thorough. Immediate decontamination is what the Soldier does right away to save life and limit spread. Operational decontamination lets the unit keep fighting by cleaning what Soldiers touch. Thorough decontamination reduces contamination enough to return to near-normal operations and requires support and a site.

What are the three techniques of immediate decontamination?

Skin decontamination, personal wipe-down, and operator spray-down. Skin decontamination comes first and must start within seconds of contamination to do any good.

What are the three weapons control statuses?

Weapons hold, weapons tight, and weapons free. Weapons hold means engage only in self-defense or when directly ordered. Weapons tight means engage only targets positively identified as hostile. Weapons free means engage any target not positively identified as friendly.

What does MOPP stand for, and what are the postures?

Mission-oriented protective posture. The postures are MOPP Ready, MOPP 0, MOPP 1, MOPP 2, MOPP 3, and MOPP 4. The commander sets the level to balance protection against the heat and performance cost of wearing the gear.

What is M8 paper used for and what do the colors mean?

M8 paper detects and gives a presumptive identification of liquid chemical agents. Yellow or gold indicates a G-series nerve agent, dark green indicates a V-series nerve agent, and red indicates a blister agent. It only works on liquid, not vapor, and a color change is presumptive, not confirmation.

What is M9 paper and how does it differ from M8 paper?

M9 paper is adhesive-backed tape worn on the uniform or attached to equipment. It turns red, pink, or reddish purple when it touches a liquid chemical agent droplet. Unlike M8 paper, it detects that an agent is present but does not identify which agent it is.

What is required at MOPP Ready and at MOPP 0?

At MOPP Ready the Soldier carries the protective mask, and the rest of the ensemble is available to be issued: the first set within two hours and a second set within six hours. At MOPP 0 the Soldier carries the mask and has the suit, boots, and gloves readily available.

MOPP 1, the overgarment is worn. MOPP 2, the overgarment and overboots are worn. MOPP 3, the overgarment, overboots, and mask with hood are worn. MOPP 4, everything is worn, including the gloves. Items not yet worn stay carried.
