What this does not do

Eight hundred points is the ceiling on both boards, but the categories are weighted differently. SGT: 280 military training, 145 awards, 240 military education, 135 civilian education. SSG: 230 military training, 165 awards, 245 military education, 160 civilian education. Weapons qualification is worth 160 to a SPC competing for SGT and only 110 to a SGT competing for SSG.
Read the military education ceilings as nested, not additive. The 240 (SGT) and 245 (SSG) figures are the ceiling on the whole military education category; the 110/115 resident ceiling and the 90 computer-based ceiling sit inside it, so a Soldier cannot bank 240 for leader courses and then another 110 and 90 on top. The three military education entries in this dataset therefore overlap by design, and adding every category ceiling together will exceed 800.
Nobody fills out the worksheet by hand. Promotion points are calculated automatically from personnel and training data in the Army's HR system of record (IPPS-A), and the promotion point worksheet is generated from that data. An award, course, certification, weapons score, or AFT score that is not in the system is worth zero, no matter what is in the Soldier's hand.
The cutoff score is a requirements number, not a passing grade. A cutoff is established for every MOS every month, and all fully qualified Soldiers who meet or exceed the announced cutoff are selected for promotion that month. A cutoff of 798 is applied to an MOS when no requirements exist. A high cutoff says the MOS is full, not that the Soldier scored badly.
Points are recomputed every month and the timeline is unforgiving. A Soldier approved for integration onto the promotion recommended roster by the 26th calendar day of February competes against the 1 April cutoff, and a data change recorded after the 26th slips to the follow-on month - the regulation's own example is an entry on 3 March counting against the 1 May cutoff. There is no consideration for scores corrected outside the promotion cycle.
Fitness points come from the last record Army Fitness Test, even if an earlier test was higher. The scale runs from 1 point at 300 to 120 points at 500 and is identical for both boards. Soldiers with a permanent profile are awarded 60 points for each fitness test event waived or alternate event passed and use their actual score for events they perform; under Army Directive 2025-06, Soldiers in the listed combat specialties instead receive 70 points for a profiled or alternate event for semi-centralized promotion purposes.
Weapons points come from the most recent qualification with the primary weapon assigned in DTMS. A score older than 24 months earns nothing, and if no primary weapon is designated in DTMS at least one day before firing, the Soldier is awarded zero. Soldiers in units without assigned weapons keep their last score, but once assigned to a unit with weapons they have 12 months to requalify.
Airborne advantage points - 20 for a parachutist in a paid parachute position, 40 for a jumpmaster with ASI 5W - are awarded without regard to the maximum point rules, so they can push a total past a category ceiling. HQDA audits any record showing 798 promotion points or more.
Recent change: the 6 March 2026 edition of AR 600-8-19 folded in the Army Fitness Test and removed every reference to Structured Self-Development and the Distributed Leader Courses, including the bar to continued service for failing to complete them. It also added the Technician, Mariner, and Mountaineering badges to the awards table and revised the airborne advantage criteria. Army National Guard boards use the same 800 administrative points, but Guard SSG boards add up to 250 leadership points for a 1,050-point total.
