Army Leadership and the Profession
ADP 6-22 is the Army's leadership publication and the source of the leadership requirements model. It defines the Army profession, the Army Ethic, and what leaders are expected to be, know, and do. Expect it at every promotion board.

The Army: A Primer to Our Profession of Arms
FM 1 is a short primer on what it means to belong to the profession of arms and what Soldiers owe each other, civilian leadership, and the country. It was published in May 2025 as a standalone read for Soldiers rather than a replacement for ADP 1. It is written to be read cover to cover in one sitting.

Enlisted Promotions and Demotions
AR 600-8-19 is the enlisted promotion and demotion regulation: eligibility, the semi-centralized promotion system for sergeant and staff sergeant, promotion boards, and administrative demotions. It is one of the most frequently revised regulations in the Army, and the promotion point tables change with it. Always work from the edition currently posted on APD, not a saved copy.

The Army
ADP 1 explains what the Army is for: who we serve, where our authority comes from, and what the Army contributes to the joint force. It is written as much for Congress, sister services, and partners as it is for Soldiers. Read it when you need the institutional answer to why the Army exists rather than how it fights.

Recite the Soldier's Creed.
I am an American Soldier. I am a warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States and live the Army Values. I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills. I always maintain my arms, my equipment, and myself. I am an expert and I am a professional. I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat. I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life. I am an American Soldier.

Event-oriented counseling, performance counseling, and professional growth counseling.

Informal and formal. An informal complaint is resolved directly, with the help of a peer, a leader, or an equal opportunity professional, and is not written up. A formal complaint is filed in writing on DA Form 7279 and sworn to, normally within 60 calendar days of the incident, and it triggers required actions and timelines.

An AAR is a structured professional discussion of an event that lets the participants work out for themselves what happened and how to improve. The four steps are plan, prepare, conduct, and follow up. The follow-up is the part units skip and the part that produces the improvement.
- Board question
What is the first sentence of the NCO Creed?
No one is more professional than I.
