What is the difference between a challenge and password and a running password?
The challenge and password is a two-part exchange used at a fixed point to confirm identity: one element issues the challenge, the other answers with the password. A running password is a single prearranged word used to get a friendly element through a position quickly when there is no time for the exchange, such as when moving under fire.
